A2A, but not my area of expertise. It seems to me that the downfall of the Empire came from military defeats and loss of influence over its neighbors. Up until 1565 the Empire was a very strong presence in the region, interfering with the inner politics of many of its neighbors to the north. They had enough of it and formed a coalition and marched against Rama Rama, the leader of the Vijayanagara. This should have been an easy victory for Vijayanagara, but instead the battle was lost and the army routed with disastrous consequences, as the victorious forces destroyed one of the Vijayanagara's cities to the point that it was never reocupied and the loss of prestige and military dominance resulted in a slow decline of the Empire until the last Emperor took power in 1632. His successor declared himself king and it all ended up with the last of Vijayanagara being conquered by the Sultanate of Bijapur. Many regions previously under Vijayanagara's suzerainty declared independence and existed past the end of the actual Empire.
