Pipelines are most convenient, efficient and economical mode of transporting liquids like petroleum, petroleum products, natural gas, water, milk, etc. Even solids can also be transported through pipelines after converting them into slurry.The country had a network of about 5,035 km long pipelines in 1980 which has increased to over 7,000 km now. Pipelines have both advantages and disadvantages as described below.
