Batting Review
Some of the problems that caused their downfall in the last season still persist. For example, their middle-order still looks vulnerable despite the return to the set-up of Suresh Raina, who abruptly pulled out of the last season. However, his return may not be of much help to the struggling CSK as he seems past his prime. So does MS Dhoni. That both of them — even Ambati Rayudu — haven’t had much game time since last IPL doesn’t help their cause. To further increase their problems, Ravindra Jadeja is also without any exposure to competitive cricket since he sustained a thumb injury during the Test series on the Australia tour in January 2021.They have added Moeen Ali and Robin Uthappa to improve their batting firepower. Both Ali and Uthappa have the ability to give CSK a quick start that they sorely missed last season. But for them to bat together, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who finished the last season with three consecutive half-centuries, will have to be dropped down the order or out of the side. And if Ali comes in, how will they fit Faf du Plessis, their best batsman last season, in the Playing XI.
Bowling Review
Their bowling department looks well-stocked and balanced. Despite Josh Hazlewood opting out and Lungi Ngidi not available for the initial matches, CSK have no reason to worry about their bowling depth. Deepak Chahar is their reliable new-ball option and the Rajasthan pacer has learned to handle the death-overs too. Dwayne Bravo is fit again and recently played against Sri Lanka at home. Sam Curran, who impressed Dhoni in his first season with CSK, is getting wiser and wiser as a player and recently did well with both bat and ball against India in the T20Is and the ODIs. Shardul Thakur is on a wicket-taking spree and adds variety to CSK’s pace attack.
