Answer :-

White revolution , also known as Operation Flood , was a program started in India in 1970 by the National Dairy Development Board . The main aim of this program was to increase the milk supply in India . And , to enhance employment as well as income of the rural areas . This program was the Brainchild of Verghese kurien , also known as the " Father of the White Revolution " .

The aim of the Operation Flood was threefold :-

  • To increase the milk Production .
  • To increase the overall income of the rural areas .
  • To provide milk to the urban consumers at reasonable price .

The Operation was carried out in three phrases :-

  1. Phrase I :- (1970 - 1980) During this phrase , skimmed milk powder and butter oil all was gifted by the European Union through the World food programme . This program link India's leading milk production unit with the consumers in major Metropolitan cities such as - Delhi , Mumbai , Kolkata and Chennai .
  2. Phase II :- (1981 - 1985) This phase saw an increase in the milk production units from 18 to 136 . By the end of 1985 , there was more 40,000 villages cooperatives covering more than 4 million milk producers .
  3. Phase III :- (1985 - 1996) During this phase , Dairy cooperatives expanded and strengthened their infrastructure . Veterinary first-aid health care services , feed and artificial insemination services were provided to Cooperative members .
  • As a result of the White Revolution , India became the world's largest producer of milk , surpassing even the USA's milk production .
