In recent years, man’s awareness about his environment has considerably increased. Man’s existence and well-being are intimately related with environment and its conservation. Environment stands for all that surrounds us and our planet Earth. It means all influences and circumstances that directly affect us and other living beings. In other words, our bio-sphere and eco-system constitute our atmosphere and environment. These sustain life on the earth.
The Earth is unique because of its environment which is life-giving and life-sustaining. On other planets like Mars, Jupiter etc., there is no life because there is no environment. Life has been possible only on our planet because of a certain balance in natural elements like air, water, earth, soil etc. Without this environment and its desired balance, our Earth would have been another dead and lifeless planet revolving round the Sun.
Of late our environment has been in great danger. There has been grave ecological crisis threatening the very existence of life. We have been destroying valuable natural resources and polluting the environment. And thereby have poisoned and polluted our own life and living. Any undesirable and excessive addition of substances which adversely changes this balance may be called pollution. These substances may be called pollutants. When this imbalance grows beyond a certain limit, it may prove fatal both for human and other living beings. And this imbalance, increasing rapidly and universally, has rung alarm bells. There is an urgent need to protect and conserve our environment.
