The story titled 'The Verger', written by ‘Somerset Maugham’, is about a church verger named 'Albert Foreman'. He is very fond of his small job but when he realizes one day he is fired because of being less educated, when he feels very sad. He takes it as a challenge and sets up a successful business on his own. He is illiterate, cannot sign his signature, yet he manages a business successfully.

The plot of the story 'The Verger' is quite simple. It depicts the life of a person who is fired from a small job due to his illiteracy but still does not give up and establishes himself as a successful businessman in the society. He still remains ground to earth person in his life.

The author tells through this story that it is better to highly educated than to understand the practical knowledge of life and even an illiterate person can know the practical values of life.

To be successful in life, practicality is necessary for life, not a very high education. Practical knowledge of life is more needed to become a successful person in life. ‘Albert Foreman’ establishes this belief.

An account on the paradise of the story The verger:

Somerset Maugham is the author of the story “The Verger”. Albert Edward was the verger of the church St. Peter’s Church of Neville Square. The church had its own, name and recognition. Albert Edward had been working there for almost sixteen years. On the day of Christening, where the Vicar had been recently appointed asked Verger to meet him. Edward went to the vicar room, and vicar told him that they were all happy with the verger’s work and sincerity.

Verger thanked the vicar and still wondered why he was asked to meet the new vicar. Vicar continued that he just got the news that Edward could neither read nor write and asked him if he could learn to read and write three months. If he could not equip then he had to resign.

Verger replied that he could not do so and he resigned. After his resignation, he started a small business of his own and he became very successful. He showed the world that practical knowledge and sincerity with interest is enough to be successful. Nonetheless, he still preserved with great sincerity the Verger dress.
