Answer:

Aim: To show the dissociation/ionisation of H20 into H2 and O2.

Materials required: Plastic mug, test tube, graphite rod, anode, cathode, rubber stopper, 6V battery, switch and water.

Procedure: Take a glass beaker fix two electrodes. The positive electrode acts as anode &negative electrode act as cathode. Fill 1/3 of beaker with water. Take two test tubes. Insert electrodes. Observe the level of water in the test tubes. Connect the electrodes to a battery. Pass the electricity for a period of time. Later switch off the current and observe the level of water in test tubes.

Observation: The level of water in the test tubes is decreased. The free space in the test tubes is filled with H2 & O2 gases. Oxygen gas is evolved at anode and hydrogen gas released at cathode.

Conclusion: when electricity is passed through water, the water molecules split into H2 and O2.
