The presence of starch in food :
Material required :
Test tubes, test-tube stand and holder, burner, dropper, iodine solution, distilled water, and food.
Working model :
- Take a test tube and add the tiny amount to food particles to it.
- Then, add 8 to 12ml of distilled water to the solute and heat the test tube.
- Filter out the solid particles and add few drops of iodine solution to the filtered water solution.
- If the solution turns blue-black colour, it represents the presence of starch in the food.
Here we present to one more model to test the starch presence in raw substances.
starch + glucose produces electricity.
WORKING MODEL TO TEST THE PRESENCE OF STARCH USING POTATO.
Material required :
Potato, Wires, Two iron nail, A bulb (or a battery and a switch).
Working model :
- Take a potato and priick the iron nails on the both ends of it, a bit deep. ( To the extremes, if possible ).
- The more the distance between the nails, the more ions (of starch) attract them (terminals), resulting more voltage.
- The salt in the potato acts as a salt bridge between the nails, makes the ions travel through the nails.
- Connect one wire's one end to one nail and other end to the positive electrode of a bulb (or battery).
- Connect second wire's one end to one nail and other end to the negative electrode of a bulb (or battery). If you opted the battery, switch it on, now.
- The bulb starts to glow.
Quick fact :
Researchers say that an 8 minute boiled potato produces 10 times more electric current than the raw one does.
