Write an activity to show that solid can be change directly into gases state.
Answers
Answer:
One such ‘substance’ that many people are familiar with is dry ice or solid carbon dioxide. BUT, this direct solid to gas transition ONLY occurs if the pressure is low enough. At higher pressures CO2 will in fact melt into a liquid.
There is a special temperature and pressure for each substance that determines what will happen. This is called the Triple Point and is the single temperature and pressure where the substance can exist in all three states, solid, liquid and gas.
The triple point of water is 0.01 C and a pressure of only 0.006 atmospheres (quite a low pressure). Below this temperature and pressure you can only have solid or gaseous water.
Most substances have a triple point (other substance might decompose rather than having a well behaved phase diagram)
So, to answer your question - every single element on the periodic chart has a pressure and temperature region where it will change directly from solid to gas!
