Steps to be taken for promotion of Indian handicrafts

Handicrafts of India are varied and many. India is made of twenty 29 states and 7 union territories; each state and UT has its own peculiar handicrafts. Fabric dyeing, puppet making, in Rajasthan, weaving, block printing, ivory and plastic jewelry making of Gujrat, silk production, cane and bamboo craft of Assam, wood and stone carving of Tamil Nadu, etc. are quite popular, not only in India, but all across the world. Similarly, there are many other crafts being practiced in all the states.

These crafts have immense potential to contribute to the growth and development of the national economy. At the nascent stage these crafts need promotional care and management. The Government at the Central and State levels can provide this care. However, in order to promote these crafts the following steps should be taken:

1.     Developing handicrafts should be provided financial aids such as loans, banking, and required subsidies.

2.     Outlets to sell these handicrafts should be opened at places of touristic attraction.

3.     Attractive websites showing these handicrafts should be made.

4.     The Government at the Central and State levels should provide them exemption from all sorts of taxes initially. Once the sale of handicrafts picks up, the Government may consider levying reasonable taxes on handicrafts.

In conclusion it can be said Indian handicrafts should be provided above mentioned aids to promote them further.
