Lately the phrase “going green” has become a part of everyday discussion and debate. People are being told to turn off the lights, buy energy-saving appliances, and drive less. What people are not being told is why, specifically. Global warming is the increase of the Earth’s average temperature. Greenhouse gases are the cause of this problem; carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and methane (1). Normally the earth’s atmosphere lets these gases in but does not release all of it. The excess gases keep the plant warm enough to sustain life. However over time, the atmosphere has sustained damage from chemicals, like the ones released in fossil fuels, and now the planet is heating up too much too fast.

Our school recently organized a "Go Green" Day to mark environmental week. The theme "Go Green" was literally enacted by the students, who were assigned to organize numerous stalls that is in accordance to the theme o going green. The stalls sell organic things, be it bags and other products made entirely of plants. Also, there are painting competitions, debates and other competitions where the theme of nature and its preservation is made aware to the people.
Taking the initiative of spreading awareness about mother earth, the students of Class XII arranged the whole area with many props such as the planet melting, paintings depicting the deforestation, buildings coming up and forest area dwindling etc. The dress code of the day was to wear anything that is wholly natural or made out of natural sources.
The whole day was a huge success, with many of the participants presenting great ideas on how to help conserve and preserve the natural aspects of the earth, and to help in the maintenance of the world if we are to keep it alive and well for us and the future generations. The spread of awareness about our nature is our duty and it is upon us to be mindful of how we treat our planet.
