• Ours is a country of rich water resources. we have snow capped mountains, perennial rivers,lakes,ponds and seas . but despite all this , a number of regions in our country suffer from acute water shortages. There has been tremendous change in the climatic pattern over past two decades. The monsoon eludes most parts of the country and the underground water table has sunk down due to over exploitation by industrial and farming sectors . Lakes and rivers too stay dry for most parts of the year and our land and forests remain purchased for want of water . what should be done to fight this water crisis? we cannot change the forces of nature, but we can change our habits of wasting water in many ways. planting more and more trees can draw long term benefits including sufficient rainfall, conservation of water on individual level too can make a big difference. if all individuals start saving water by bringing in small change in these routine habits, million of gallons of water can be saved every day.
• For a start , we should make it a habit to close the tap after every use and close all such taps which are not in use. the left out water , for example after washing utensils , can be used for plants etc. Use of bucket and mug instead of running shower for bathing is a good idea. We must never use fresh water for gardening or washing car etc.
• similarly, we can also harvest rainwater by channelizing it into an underground tank . this water can be used later for several purpose. Rainwater harvesting raises ground water level ; reduces soil erosion and miligates the effects of drought. we must save every drop of water before it gets too late.
