India has seen a lot of socio-cultural changes over the last few decades. Accordingly, the lifestyle of people has changed and unfortunately has affected pollution levels adversely.

1.    Population and migration- The population of India is ever growing, at an alarming pace. Further, it is not equally distributed. People, both skilled labour and students migrate to cities in search of work. With more people, there will be greater requirement of daily use goods. So, more trucks are used, which emit harmful gases.

2.    Secluded lifestyle- A very small percentage of people use carpools. They find it more comfortable to drive their own vehicles. People are more at ease with mobile phones rather than interpersonal interactions. The lesser they interact with others, the harder it is to be part of a group or take a collective decision like carpooling. This adds to the air pollution.

3.    Nuclear family structure- The nuclear family system has become a trend, due to reasons like job opportunities and inability to adapt in a large family. As a result, more housing is needed to accommodate everyone. Builders cut down trees to make space for new housing societies. The cutting down of trees has undoubtedly affected the quality of air. There are fewer trees to absorb the carbon dioxide and give out oxygen, thus causing an overall increase in air pollution.

4.    Excessive use of appliances- As children and adults both prefer to remain indoors rather than venture out, their bodies have become used to the air conditioners. AC’s are turned on for long periods of time, even when they are not needed. Similarly, a fridge has become a necessity. Owing to time crunch, people cook in bulk and freeze the food. This overdependence on cooling devices has contributed to air pollution in a major way since they release chemicals like hydroflourocarbons (HFC’s) into the atmosphere. These pollutants cause global warming.

These are a few ways in which socio-cultural changes have affected air pollution in our country.
