Childhood is the most fun and memorable time in anyone’s life. It’s the first stage of life which we enjoy in whatever way we like. Besides, this is the time that shapes up the future. The parents love and care for their children and the children to the same too. Moreover, it’s the golden period of life in which we can teach children everything.Childhood is the most fun and memorable time in anyone’s life. Welcome to the 21st century, sitting with a cup of coffee and a newspaper in relaxing mode doesn’t seem to be easy nowadays. News about sexual assault, physical and emotional abuse on children is soaring high. Nine-year-old stripped in front of the entire class, apparently for not doing the homework. Another day it was a tale of siblings sold by their own parent to the warehouse owing to poverty. Last month the entire news feeds and the sources were filled with the “Hyderabad shocker”, where a 3-year-old was allegedly molested by two female helpers in a reputed school of the city! Apparently, this is more than enough for a parent to get shiver through their spines.

Approximately over 7200 children are sexually abused, and it is noted with such a shame that 40% of children in India are often lured into trafficking, drugs forced labour and other offences. The survey changes every year yet without any sign of a decrease in number.

UN declared 4th June as International Innocent Children’s Day victim of Aggression. Initially, the purpose was to focus on the victims particularly children of the Lebanon War 1982. The sole purpose of the event was gradually spread across the globe to concede the pain suffered by children around the globe who are victims of physical, mental and sexual abuse! This day the UN pledge to protect the rights of children. When a child becomes a victim of abuse, the bruises hit both physically and emotionally. However, the emotional trauma remains for a long period of time, may be lifelong. Even though the children are not responsible for the harm inflicted upon them, child psychologists Neeta Ravindran says, “The trauma stimulates some characteristics that may lead to unhealthy adulthood if maltreated”! Systematic care with love and extreme patience lay in the hands of both parent/guardians and psychologist because the pain once shunned, would turn in to grave concern. Along with creating a strong awareness in the society, it is every single citizen duty to stay observant to the surroundings. It is an utmost priority to keep your kids safe, but a little vigilant to the other side can help a kid falling prey!

A recent survey on child abuse came up with a drastic increase in numbers of an incident of physical and emotional abuse inside their own house and within the families. Frantically, it’s also noticed that a child from secure background to that who is in deep clinches of poverty are affected equally. And the culprit is always their own or someone close!

Recently while talking to a Hyderabad based child psychologist quoted that there should be a counsellor at every school and a parent should not be considered a taboo to bring their little ones to a counsellor whenever required. It is evident that many times kids open-up to Professionals than parents. There is nothing absurd in consulting psychologist, taking help does make a difference. A healthy little mind is after all the future of a nation and we all know that “bruises can heal, but the real hurt is concealed”.

Years back on a rainy day (in Kerala) when I was on my way to home from school three little kids singing “pardesi pardesi” in a “seriously not-so-good to listen” voice grabbed my attention. It became a habit to see them on buses or sideways shops daily singing the same song. Nevertheless, one day reading their “accidental death” in newspaper broke my heart to the utmost level. I till date regret for being a bystander, for not doing what was right!

Never be a bystander- be it your home, neighbourhood or the regular streets you daily pass through. Maybe there is a child waiting for your help!
