Science is an umbrella term which covers a lot of dimensions under it. There are few dimensions such as increased crop production, disease control, and technological advancements in education which are beneficial for the survival of mankind whereas others such as technological advancements in weapon production is not just controlling man's life but also destroying life.
There are always two sides of a coin. Just like that, how science is helpful to mankind and not controlling human life is completely depends upon how we are practicing it.
