The world has indeed become a much smaller place with the growth of communication and social media. It has changed everything, our interaction with one another and even ourselves.
Social media has indeed become a platform for sharing our ideas and expressions. It has become a great place to hang out with friends and make new ones. However it has also ruined our social connection with friends. A survey was conducted that asked 14- 24 year olds in the UK how social media impacts their health and wellbeing. The survey results found that social media led to increased feelings of depression, anxiety poor body image and loneliness.
In social media, people post pictures of idealized and perfect images of themselves which creates a feeling of inferiority among viewers. Girls are particularly at risk. Girls are socialized more to compare themselves to other people. So kids spend kours pruning their online identities trying to project an idealized image.
Another risk posed by social media is the increased risk of cyberbullying. Social media allows literally anyone to comment an offensive or hurtful remark without even showing their identity. It has also become a breeding ground for unnecessary rivalries and hatred among people.
People should be aware of the dangers of online communication and their effects on ap person's mental health.
