River yamuna, an important river quite like the Ganges, is equally heavily polluted.
It has several and large industrial cities on its banks like Yamuna nagar, a few cities in Haryana like Shonepat, Paanipat, New Delhi, city of Agra and ofcourse Mathura.
It’s a known fact that the water of river Yamuna is not good enough for even bathing, as far drinking is concerned it unthinkable, more-so with the latest central pollution control board report, will definitely make us think again about this problems as the river is full of excreta and the river once revered is nothing more than a glorified drain.
According to the stipulated standards the water could be made potable with treatment if faecal coliform which is lesser than 500 mu per 100 mL and considered for the purpose of bathing if the number is less than 5000 mu per 100 mL.
Faecal coliform are bacteris that orioginate in excreta and these levels have reached as high as 1.8 crore per 100 mL.
Considering drinking water with no known treatment methods by using disinfectants should not have a coliform count more than 50 mu per 100 mL and must have a dissolved oxygen of 6 mg per liter of water.
The total load of discharged pollution through 18 drains in river yamuna during the last decade is close to almost three thirty tonnes per day.
The drains basically are meant to used for storm water and also the over discharge planned out as per river basin system.
But presently the high drains are getting used for carrying both sewage which are either treated or untreated as well as industrial effluent along with storm water.
In recent times everyday approximately 2000 million liters of waste and 132 metric tonnes of BOD are discharged into river yamuna form Delhi through 25 drains.
Domestic sector is the main source of water pollution in terms volume and everyday approximately 1700 million waste water is discharged from domestic sector and 300 million liters from industrial sector.
The increase in the pollution has resulted in increase in the generation of domestic waste water from 967 million liters per day in 1977 to 1700 million liters in 1996.
The capacity for treatment of domestic waste water has increased from 450 million liters per day.
In term of percentage of waste water treated to generated the increase is from 46 percent to 75 percent.
Apart from the sewage from municipality, huge amount of diversified industries like the paper and pulp, factories of sugar, skin tannery, small and big steel plants, various chemicals, different types rubber factories, usual glass and enginnering, the plastics and ofcourse the food processing directly discharge their wastes into it.
The pollution studies so far made on these water bodies reveal that the water bodies which are linked with human population, rapidly get polluted due to run off, direct human activity and sewage discharge.
The bodies of water, which remain away from popullation get polluted only slowly through natural sources.
Tourists activities remain to be a significant source of water pollution as both sewage and infestation by water plants.
