The Autobiography of a Stray
I *Cat.
By "SEASPRITE" (13 years).
TT is rather an embarrassing situa-
tion for one to describe himself. I
will therefore quote my former mis-
tress:-"My cat, Pete, is pure black,
except for a pretty white patch on his
throat. ' He has large green eyes,
that twimkle like stars during the
night. I love him dearly because he
Is so playful."
* I also liked my little mistress, but
humans are strange people, and Betty
was no exception. She made a bas-
ket, lined it with gauzy material, and
tied a large bow on the handle. I
submitted to being put into this every
evening. As soon as the house was
quiet I would creep out and try to
catch some mice. I was on the point
of rebellion when my fate seemed de-
cided for me my the arrival of Betty's
cousin.
Dorothy was younger than Betty,
and took a great fancy to me. She
stroked me and played with my tail.
At last Betty agreed to transfer me
to Dorothy's keeping. Although that
is quite a year ago, I clearly remem-
ber my bitter feelings when I heard
about this. One very dark evening I
decided to run away.
I am now a stray cat. I beg or
work for food. I once heard a human
being say: "Work is scarce. There is
a great deal of unemployment, and
tile rations are scarce, and every one
is poor." This certainly was the case
with me. Mice and rats were few,
and cheese was a delicacy of the past.
I occasionally got homesick, but when
I remember how free I am, all other
thoughts vanish. I cannot understand
how humans can live in one place all
their lives. I prefer to beg or starve
than to lie on a lined basket.
