Answer:

Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet. They help people thrive and survive by, for example, purifying water and air and providing people with jobs; some 13.2 million people across the world have a job in the forest sector and another 41 million have a job that is related to the sector. Many animals also rely on forests. Forests are home to more than three-quarters of the world’s life on land. Forests also play a critical role in mitigating climate change because they act as a carbon sink—soaking up carbon dioxide that would otherwise be free in the atmosphere and contribute to ongoing changes in climate patterns.

But forests around the world are under threat, jeopardizing these benefits. The threats manifest themselves in the form of deforestation and forest degradation. The main cause of deforestation is agriculture (poorly planned infrastructure is emerging as a big threat too) and the main cause of forest degradation is illegal logging. In 2019, the tropics lost close to 30 soccer fields' worth of trees every single minute.

Deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rain forests because these forests are home to much of the world’s biodiversity. For example, in the Amazon around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years, mostly due to forest conversion for cattle ranching. Deforestation in this region is particularly rampant near more populated areas, roads and rivers, but even remote areas have been encroached upon when valuable mahogany, gold, and oil are discovered.

WWF has been working to protect forests for more than 50 years. WWF works with governments, companies, communities and other stakeholders to promote certification for responsible forest management practices, combat illegal logging, reform trade policies, protect forested areas, and more

Answer:

All of our childhood stories mentioned forests in them. It was and still is a habitat for fairies, prince, princess and to most beautiful and exquisite animals. Forest is an important part of the environment because it acts like lungs of the earth as it helps in the purification atmosphere and water. It also provides shelter and food to the living organisms like animals, plants, and microbes. It makes the raw material available for industries like timber, resins, gums etc. Forest is a habitat for many plants and animals because it provides a suitable environment for them. For example, neem, Sheesham, Palash,  tiger, porcupine, elephants, jackal etc.  The ground beneath the tree of the forest is the forest floor. It consists of a root, soil, decomposers and decomposing organic matter. Forests provide us with shelter, livelihoods, water, food and fuel security. All these activities directly or indirectly involve forests. Some are easy to figure out - fruits, paper and wood from trees, and so on. They uphold the ecological balance in several ways; -Forest gives a diversified environment for plants and animals and helps in retaining the water cycle of an area. They prevent soil deterioration and stimulate the soil with nutrients. They retain an appropriate balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Forests are rich in vegetation. Herbs, shrubs, and trees in the forests hold the topmost layer firmly by their roots. This does not allow natural forces like wind and water to carry away the topmost fertile layer of the soil easily. Hence, forests prevent soil erosion. Forests help to 'cool down' the Earth through their role in water evaporation, which creates clouds that reflect back sunlight. The forest creates fresh water runoff for the streams and rivers, and helps pull rainfall in coastal areas inland. The loss of trees and other vegetation can cause climate change, desertification, soil erosion, fewer crops, flooding, increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and a host of problems for indigenous people.
