Common social evils include: caste system, poverty, dowry system, gender inequality, illiteracy etc. The social evils and superstitions that dominated the society over the centuries made social reforms imperative for the development of the society and the , masses. In the 1 9th century, the newly educated increasingly revolted against the rigid social conventions and outdated customs. They could no longer tolerate irrational and dehumanising social practices. Moreover, the backward features of Indian society, such as the caste system or inequality of the sexes had religious sanctions in the past. Therefore, it was necessary to reform religious practices as well.

• Social evil is a term used for social problems or social issues. A social ill is a disorder that certain members of a society do not like. Such ills hamper the development in a nation.

1. Caste - Marriage, social circle, and occupation are determined by a man's caste. The untouchables are afflicted with a slew of weaknesses, making their livable condition poor. Not only its degrading and inhumane, but also a source of social disintegration, as it goes against the democratic ideal of equality by birth.
2. Poverty - Poverty is a dehumanising state where individuals are struggling to meet basic needs such as food, housing, hygiene, and education. Illiteracy tends to be the source of all socio-economic problems in our society.
3. Gender Inequality - Even today, women earn less education and are not working at the same rate as male peers. Beyond problems of social equality and human growth, there are significant gender inequalities even in their health avenues.
