ESSAY ON MOHARRAM FESTIVAL:
The Muharram is one of the greatest festivals of the Muslims. This festival is observed to remember Hassan and Hussain – the two grandsons of the prophet Mohammed. These two young men got Mohammed’s property. The Caliph of Damascus wanted to get that property. Hence, he had Hassan killed. Hussain fought with the Caliph for a long time and was ultimately killed on the plains of Karbala by the Euphrates.
The Muharram is more a festival of mourning than merry-making. It begins on the first day of the month of Muharram and ends on the tenth day. The Muslims express their sorrow for the death of Hussain, and also observe fast for ten days. During the Muharram, colourful processions are taken out with beautiful tazias which are regarded as tombs over Hussain’s grave. On the eleventh day, the tazias are immersed in rivers or ponds. At last, they join a feast to which the people from other religions also are invited.
