My neighbours were an elderly couple.

They were very friendly and I addressed them as Grandpa and Grandma.

Grandpa had met with an accident quite a few years ago and had to be confined to bed. He could no longer walk or sit. He was totally bed ridden.

Grandma took good care of him and I sometimes visited him feeding him stories of my school and friends. He called me 'little friend'.

One day, early in the morning, Grandpa's attendant rushed to our house and asked us to accompany her. She said Grandma was not waking up. I accompanied my mother and ran to my neighbours' place.

My mother, who is a doctor, felt Grandma's pulse. Slowly she took me and the attendant aside and said that Grandma had left for God. But we should not tell Grandpa. It would break his weak heart.

The responsibility fell on me to keep the truth from Grandpa. As they took Grandma away, Grandpa asked me where they were taking her. I looked straight into his face and said that Grandma was a little unwell and they were taking her to a hospice for a while. She would return as soon as she was well.

It was a lie but it changed Grandpa's life. If I had told him the truth that day he would not be able to take the truth.

Every day, henceforth, I would visit him and share stories. I pretended I had visited Grandma and cooked up stories of our visit.

Grandpa lived for just one year after Grandma's passing away. But my lie had kept him living with hope. The night he passed away he had taken my hand just before dying, and said, 'Little friend tell your Grandma I love her dearly',
