MAN'S INFLUENCE on them can be summarized as follows;
About the atmosphere:
- We have degraded the AIR QUALITY around us by releasing fossil fuel emissions, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), black carbon, volatile organic compounds (LOCs), etc. This in turn helped
- global warming temperatures
- unstable weather events such as flash floods and droughts
- acid rain
- climate change and
- disturbances in seasonal weather conditions
About the biosphere:
- The existence of many species (flora and fauna) is seriously threatened and this accelerates the extinction process that would otherwise take decades to occur naturally.
- It also reduces DIVERSITY in terms of species, genes, etc. This is also due to the OVERUSE of bioresources.
In the hydrosphere:
- The entry of untreated industrial waste, hazardous chemical compounds (HCC), microplastics, etc. into water sources caused
- toxicity of rivers, oceans
- loss of marine diversity (coral bleaching)
- warming oceans
- melting ice sheets
- coastal flooding etc
On the lithosphere:
- Reckless exploitation of mineral resources like METALS, ORES, FOSSIL FUELS (oil and natural gas), GROUNDWATER, destructive mining activities, improper reclamation of remaining areas, construction of huge reservoirs, faulty agricultural practices etc. led to
- soil pollution
- groundwater contamination
- desertification
- decrease in soil fertility, etc
which in turn affects bio-geochemical cycles such as carbon cycles, nitrogen cycles, etc.
And since all four spheres together form a LIFE SYSTEM on an environmental (local) scale, the slightest disturbance in any one can spill over into the others, creating an imbalance in the BALANCE OF NATURE, making survival a challenge.
