Mummies are preserved dead bodies of animals or humans who had religious or social status in the society. Mummification was basically done in Egypt but there were also people in different countries who mummified the dead bodies of their loved ones. Most common Egyptian method of mummification was by inserting a star shaped thin rod through nose and crushing the brain. As brain is composed of fat and water it got crushed easily and became liquified then the liquified brain was taken out through nose. Like this abdominal cavity was taken out and many different organs were removed and preserved. Some theories say that Egyptians didn't remove heart since they believed that soul rests in the heart. After removing organs the organs were rinsed and the bodies were covered with rock salt to prevent dehydration. After few days of sprinkling rock salt on dead bodies , a paste was applied all over the body which was waterproof and also had anti germ effect. After applying paste the bodies were wrapped in bandages and kept in coffins along with them the belongings of the bodies were also kept since Egyptians believed that in afterlife their loved ones will come along with their belongings. I hope this helps you.
