Muscle contraction refers to the activation of sites which generate tension in muscle fibres. It is not necessary that the length of the muscle decreases during muscle contraction.
Muscle contraction can be isotonic or isometric. Muscle contraction is isotonic if muscle tension remains same and muscle length changes (can increase as well as decrease). Muscle contraction is isometric if muscle length remains same but muscle tension changes. During muscle contraction, both length and tension of the muscle may also change.
Muscle contraction is followed by muscle relaxation.
