What is your favorite activity and why?

Well, I have two favourite activities. One is reading. I read anything and everything from Shakespeare to Chinua Achebe to Maeve Binchy to Medical journals and even torn newspaper pages used to wrap finger foods by roadside hawkers . There is no restriction to where I read too. Usually, you will find a book in my hands at the dinner table (bad table manner, I know, I know), in the restroom and even while strolling around the neighborhood.

Closely dogging its footsteps is my other favorite activity - writing poetry. I don't know if I am any good but I always have my pen and jotter handy as the muse has a penchant for showing up in her full glory when you least expect: from being in transit with the wind howling like a banshee in my ears and headbutting me like a crazed bull to being in my living room wiping mucus from my toddler's nose. Then, you see me running like a roadside newspaper vendor eager to make a sale into my room to grab my jotter.

Now, let's talk about why they are my favorite activities.

I believe education goes beyond what is obtainable in a structured environment like the school system. You will be amazed at the vast knowledge you will gain by reading beyond your field of specialization. As a result, you will be able to converse intelligently, to a large extent, on virtually every topic imaginable. Moreover, some of the life hacks I find useful today in my daily life were gems I found on the pages of some book.

As for poetry, it is an outlet for unleashing my thoughts on the world which would have otherwise, remained caged forever as I'm introverted and find making friends and having conversations a bit hard.

I would like to include one of my poems in this answer. I’m Nigerian (you will need that information for context as some of the words in the poem are peculiar to Nigeria). So, here goes:

THE ENABLER

You teach your daughter

To be courteous and loyal

And to turn the other cheek

While the one is yet unslapped

You give her a broom and mop

And bid her sweep and wipe

The pots and pans and plates

Are hers to take

She pounds and grinds

And cooks and broils

And grills and bakes

And washes and fetches

Till she's tired and weary

Your perfect little deputy mommy

Made into a perfect little dizzy dummy

You wake her up

With a knock on the head at six

"Aren't you ashamed, you sluggard?"

You scream

"You have plenty work to do"

And there her brother lies

On piles and piles of clothes and stuff

Strewn here and there

And far and wide

Snoring like a locomotive on the run

You smile indulgently

And fluff up his pillows

Then cover him

With your multicolored wrapper and all

And he rolls over

Changing gear

Like a tired old Ford mobile

Saliva dribbling from his open mouth

Your son

Your dear little precious boy

Crude, lazy and brash

And uncouth as uncouth can be

Yet, he's your sweet little sonshine boy

He does no wrong in your indulgent eyes

It's a favour if he dumps his dirty plates

In the sink after meal

For his dotting womenfolk to wash

He knows not the colour detergent is

He unwraps 'fufu'

And drops the nylon on the floor

Throws his shirt here and there

And you wonder what his shoes

Are doing on the fridge

But smile fondly anyway and say nothing

"Boys will be boys" you mutely say

He can't even boil water for his tea

Yet screams at his sister and you

Whenever food comes late

But you smile on and on

"Boys will be boys"

You insist and claim

It's sad to say

But you have a king and slave

Both born of one

You tell your daughter

That marriage is all the ambition

She needs to have

But tell your son nothing of the sort

He can aspire to be whatever he wants to be

And you urge him on in talk and deed

Your actions and inactions

Are nauseating woman

And will soon come home to roost

You will see

Our society will never get better

Because of you

You perfect little enabler of patriarchy
