Sister Rani Maria was born Rani Maria Vattalil on January 29, 1954. She has always been a religious person and entered the novitiate of Franciscan Clarist Congregation at Kidangoor after finishing her secondary schooling. It was during this novitiate years that she was given the religious name "Rani Maria".
Working for the welfare of the poor people and the prosecuted Christians in her home state of Madhya Pradesh, she was loved by these people but hated by the rich landlords who had made these poor landless laborers work for them without any wage. So, as a preplanned attack by the rich landlords, she was stabbed to death on the morning of 25 February 1955 while she was going to Indore by bus. She got more than 54 stab wounds and numerous other wounds. She was not even helped by the passengers nor anyone. Her body was left on the roadside till late in the evening when the Bishop of Indore George Anathil and some priests went to collect her body and cleaned it. Even in the last moments of her death, she kept calling "Jesus" till her death.
The main accused, murderer Samundar Singh was convicted and put in prison for a lifetime sentence. But Rani Maria's family forgave him and asked for his release. He was released in 2006 due to god behavior. He was even given a rakhi by Sister Selmi Paul, also a religious like her sister Rani Maria. Such acts by the family moved him and he repented and now is doing the very work his victim had done.
