One of the most significant resources on earth is water. Life can’t live without water. Water has many unique features that make it a highly valuable resource. Together with its abundance on the planet, which is about 71% of the surface of the Earth, few specific water characteristics make it a vital resource for plants, animals, and human beings. Some of such water features are described below.
- Water has the potential to dissolve many substances and is a very effective solvent.
- In all solid, liquid, and gaseous states, the boiling point and freezing point of water make it available easily.
- The specific heat of water is pretty high. It helps water to gradually absorb and release heat, thus controlling its environment’s temperature.
- Water can enable light to reach the life forms that are immersed in it, due to its transparency. In the seas, lakes, and rivers, this really is important for the sustainability of animals and plants.
- In fact, water is neither acidic nor basic. It has a pH of 7, making it a substance that is neutral.
