White Hat Jr is a Mumbai based EdTech start up that focuses on teaching coding for young kids between the age group of 6-18. They have a solid curriculum which comes in five different categories based on the child’s grade, namely beginner, intermediate, advanced, professional and applied tech. The subjects range from data structure, app and game development to machine learning and space technology. The children at White Hat Jr are encouraged to create games, animations and applications on their own. The start up was founded by Karan Bajaj and was launched in December 2018. As reported in 2019, the organisation engaged with 150,000 students and 3000 teachers with 10,000 classes per day. In 2020, the organisation reported 400,000 students. They work with a live 1:1 online teaching format which is a very unique feature of this online training platform and one of the identities with which they are known for.

The biggest news about this start up is that Byiju’s, another famous Indian EdTech company, has acquired White Hat Jr for a whopping $300 million. This all-cash deal was made about a few hours ago and they are looking to expand to several countries later this year. This deal makes the 18-month-old Mumbai-headquartered White Hat Jr, the fastest exit story at this size in the Indian start up ecosystem. The purchase of White Hat Jr is also the largest acquisition, till date, by Byiju's. It had previously acquired Osmo, a US-based learning platform, for which it paid $120 million, in January 2019.

Along with the launch of the National Education Policy 2020, which states that coding will be taught in all schools across India from grade 6, the EdTech companies have aligned perfectly with the upcoming education system. The future is technology and there is a lot of competition going on in the industry for employment. I honestly feel that all kids should have basic coding knowledge before the age of 18, so that they can always be prepared and stay one step ahead of the others in this race to success.
