  • When a force is acting on an object in the direction of its displacement then the work done is said to be positive work done.

In this case theta is an acute angle and Cos theta is positive for acute angles.

  • When the forces acting on an object opposite to the direction of displacement then the work done is said to be negative work done.

in this case theta is an obtuse angle and Cos theta is negative for obtuse angles.

  • When the angle between direction of force and displacement is 90 degree or force is perpendicular to the direction of displacement then the work done is said to be zero work done.

In this case the work done is zero because when the applied force and particle displacement are mutually perpendicular theta is equal to 90 degree and Cos theta is equal to zero.
