your incident here..
Everyone goes through obstacles in their lives at different times and have different experiences. What you learned once you bounced back from these obstacles has shaped you into the person you currently are. I have encountered several difficulties in my life with friends and family; however, these problems have never truly impacted my academics. There was one instance when my family problems had interacted with my family life. This occurred when I was nineteen years old and about to enter my second semester of my sophomore year at Houston Community College.
At the beginning of my fall semester of my sophomore year, my Father found out that he was in the early stages of Prostate Cancer. Being that my Mother was on disability due to her heart attack, I was the only person in my household that could provide at this point. I was registered for a twelve credit hour semester at HCC and I had to take a night and weekend job waiting tables at the local Denny’s restaurant. My days consisted of being at school from 8AM to 3PM, in and out of doctor’s appointments from 3PM-5PM, school work from 6PM-10PM, and finally work from 10PM-6AM Monday thru Friday. When my second semester started I made the decision of taking eighteen credit hours rather than the average twelve hours. Between taking many classes, my Father being sick, and the stress of work my grades began to slip. I had to decide if I should drop my classes and work full-time, or quit my job and live off of the minimal savings my Father had. i could not make the decision myself; therefore, I went to my professors and explained my situation. They did not want to see me go and they conducted a private meeting amongst themselves and came to a decision to aid me through this difficult time by granting paper extensions, take home exams, etc. anything to help me. My Chemistry Professor came to my restaurant one night and re-explained that days lecture to me in-between waiting tables.
Many obstacles have been thrown at me through my life; however, I have overcome all of them. My Father’s battle with cancer was a terrible moment in my life and almost stopped me from following my dreams. Today, I am a senior at the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, Texas getting my Bachelor’s of Science degree in Environmental Science and I have maintained above a 3.0 the past four years and made Dean’s List two semesters in a row and I am looking at pursuing a Master’s of Science in Environmental Geology following graduation in May 2017. Although my sophomore year of college was a nightmare, it helped prepare me for my future and I proved to myself that I can overcome anything
hope it helps ✌
