Write an original short story which starts with the following:
The night was silent as death. Not a soul stirred, no sound of feet, no crickets chirped,
no leaves rustled, no wind in the air-and just the all-prevading sheet of darkness with
a deep colour of silence.

Answer:

It was the dead of night in December. All members of my family had retired to their beds. I alone was busy in my studies, as I had bought a new book on strange mysteries of the universe. I was so absorbed in reading this book that I became almost oblivious of my surroundings. I was feeling one with the characters of the book facing one challenge after another and coming out unscathed. I had desired to finish the major portion of the book in one night. All of a sudden at about 2 o'clock there was a knock on the outer gate of the house as the door bell had been switched off. For a moment, I felt as if .switched off. For a moment, I felt as if some character from the book had come alive to seek an adventure with me. There were repeated knocks at the gate. I had to suspend my studies and went to open the gate. No sooner did I see the face of the man in the light of the gate lights than I was amazed to learn that the man was none other than a friend of my son. He was Amit whom I had known to be quite intelligent, hard-working and religious-minded. To my shock, Amit was, in a drunken state as his gait was unsteady. Amit had been a promising boy, very good at studies. He had received a big shock of his life when his father married another woman, leaving his first devoted wife in utter distress.

I hesitatingly asked Amit what brought him there to my house at that odd hour. He told me that he was deeply disturbed and did not know where to go. As I expressed sympathy with him, he wanted me to let him give shelter for the night. I thought that he would feel consoled if I showed him hospitality. I opened the gate and gave him fruits and snacks to eat. Soon he fell asleep.

The morning showed him in good spirits and health. But a shock was not late to come to me when I realised that this gentleman, whom I thought to be a victim of circumstances, had actually become a drug addict. He had become shame-faced in seeking favours. Last night I was very friendly, compassionate and helpful to him. But now when he asked money for meeting his daily doze of drug and drink, I lost all love and concern for him. I told him to go away as there was no pity left in me.
