Rowspan is a property added to a table cell [ i.e td] so that it can span many rows. If the rowspan property is given a value of 2, it will stretch across two cells horizontally.
While colspan is a property added to a table cell [i.e td] so that it can span many columns. If the colspan property is given a value of 2, it will stretch across two cells vertically
PS: Rows are the horizontal cells in a table while columns are the vertical cells in a table

In short, colspan is used to merge 2 or more cells horizontally.
And rowspan is used to merge 2 or more cells vertically.
