The major peninsular rivers are the Godavari, Tapi,Mahanadi, Krishna and Kaveri.
Here are some characteristic features of the rivers:-
- They rise either in Western Ghats or the Satpuda-Mahadev-Maikal-Hazaribaug range.
- Most of them flow towards the east or south-east,and empty into the Bay of Bengal.
- Some of them flow towards the west, and meet the Arabian Sea.Most of these are short in length ( 30–60 km.).e.g.those from Konkan & Malabar.Tapi, which rises in the Satpuda,is the longest (725 km.)west flowing river of peninsular India.
- East flowing rivers are longer, the length ranging from few hundred kilometers to more than 1400 km.(Godavari).
- All the peninsular rivers are non-perennial.They are monsoon-fed,& are in floods only during the rainy season.
- Most large east-flowing rivers form delta's at the mouth. But the delta's are not as extensive as the ones formed by the Ganga & Brahmaputra.
- West flowing rivers do not form any delta.
- Only their lower courses are navigable.
