Appropriately, the word armadillo is Spanish for 'little-armored one.' Though most people think armadillos can roll themselves up into a ball, only the three-banded armadillo can perform this trick. The nine-banded armadillo, however, can jump 3 - 4 feet in the air! Armadillos come in a variety of sizes, ranging from a mere 3 ounces (pink fairy armadillo) to a whopping 120 pounds (giant armadillo)

The pink fairy armadillo is the smallest, and pinkest of the armadillos.

Armadillos are omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and plants. If you live in the southern United States, you'll see the nine-banded armadillo, the only one found in this country, nosing around in the early morning hours looking for things like ants, grasshoppers, snails, beetles, and termites. Armadillos don't have very good eyesight, but they do have a great sense of smell to help them in their hunting endeavors.

Armadillos come in a range of colors. The appropriately named pink fairy armadillo is a lovely salmon color, while the giant armadillo is dark brown. You may also see armadillos with yellow, gray, red, or light brown coloring, as is the case with the screaming hairy armadillo (named for the loud squeal it emits when scared).

The screaming hairy armadillo is known for the incredible squeal it makes when threatened.
