Dear student..
India has two groups of islands. The Lakshadweep Islands lie in the Arabian Sea, to the southwest of the mainland. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the mainland.
Lakshadweep is composed of small coral islands, covering a small area of 32 square kilometres. Kavaratti Island is its administrative headquarters. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are bigger in size and are more numerous and scattered. The entire group of islands is divided into Andaman (in the north) and Nicobar (in the south).
Both these island groups are rich in flora and fauna, and are of great strategic importance to the country. Hope it helps! Cheers!

the island groups of India are really unique because their are hundreds of them and not everything is known about any of them, some of them are uninhibited while some of them are just mysterious. the nature of all islands is not the same, some are of volcanic origin while some them are of coral origin. there are basically 2 island groups- andaman and nicobar islands and lakshadweep islands. they lie on the east and west of india respectively in the bay of bengal and arabian sea.
andaman and nicobar islands:
1.India's only active volcano is located in this island group, namely 'Narcondam' in Barren island.
2.these islands are of volcanic origin.
3. they lie in the bay of bengal, east of india.
4. india's southernmost point, indira point is also located here.
