1. On the basis of nature of cell or type of cell- the organism can be classified on the basis of presence of nuclear membrane and the presence of other special membrane bound organelles into prokaryotes, which lack a nuclear membrane and eukaryotes which have a true nucleus bound by a nuclear membrane.

2. On the basis of cellularity- if the organism is made up of a single cell then, the organism is classified as unicellular and if it is made up of multiple cells, then it is multicellaular. This is an important criterion for classification as sometimes organisms within the same phylum can also be uni or multi cellular.

3. On the basis of mode of nutrition- if the organism can produce its own food, it is an autotroph. But if it acquires it's nutrition from an external source, it is heterotrophic.
