AROUND THE GLOBE
Around 2500 years ago, city-states came up in Athens and Sparta in Greece. The government set up by the
people of Athens was a democracy. It lasted about 200 years. All important decisions in Athens were taken by
an assembly which met many times in a year. All free men above 30 years of age took part in the assembly.
Only men above 30 were considered citizens. Women, slaves, and foreigners did not have any such rights.
People were selected for important positions in the government through a system of lottery. Anyone could
give his name for a post.
