Answer :

Let we are given any quadratic equation : ax² + bx + c = 0

Any two quadratic polynomial will have real and equal roots if the discriminant of the quadratic polynomial is 0 i.e. b² - 4ac = 0

So, to find the nature of roots we first find the value of its determinant.

For example :

  • 4x² - 4x + 1 = 0

⇒ a = 4 , b = -4 , c = 1

⇒ D = b² - 4ac

⇒ D = 16 - 16 = 0

So, The roots are real and equal.

  • 2x² + 8x + 8 = 0

a = 2 , b = 8 , c = 8

⇒ D = b² - 4ac

⇒ D = 64 - 64 = 0

So, The roots are real and equal.
