In the 1600s, the British East India company took a fancy for cotton, which was produced in plenty, at that time in India. They exported large quantities of cotton to Britain, which soon gained popularity over wool, as the convenient dress material to use and maintain.

Later on, innovations in textile machinery, helped Britain take the lead over countries like India, in cotton textile manufacture.

The two different reasons for concentration of cotton textiles industries in Britain are as follows:


I)Capture of Indian Markets- the cotton clothes of British flooded in markets of India by the year 1830. this adversely affected the weavers and spinners.  


II)Competition- The Indian textiles have to compete with the British textile in the markets of Europe.
