Ethanol

Definition:

Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, or alcohol, a member of a class of organic compounds that are given the general name alcohols

Chemical formula:

The chemical formula of ethanol is C_{2} H_{5} OH.

Uses:

  • Ethanol is a common industrial chemical that is used as a solvent, in the production of other organic compounds, and as a fuel additive (forming a mixture known as a gasohol).
  • Many alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wine, and distilled spirits, contain ethanol as an intoxicating element.

Formation:

There are two main processes for the manufacture of ethanol.

  • Fermentation is the process of converting carbohydrates to ethanol using yeast cells. Sugar crops like beets and sugarcane, as well as grain crops like corn, are the most common raw materials fermented for the manufacturing of industrial alcohol (maize).
  • The hydration of ethylene is accomplished by passing a mixture of ethylene and a large excess of steam over an acidic catalyst at high temperature and pressure.
