Write any two ways of energy flow through an ecosystem
Answers
Energy flow in an ecosystem:
Sun is the only source of energy in every ecosystem.
Green plants contain chlorophyll which can absorb solar energy by the process of photosynthesis.
Herbivores or plant eating organisms consume the plants and receive some of the energy stored in plants.
Carnivores or flesh eating organisms by consuming the herbivores satisfy the need of energy in their body.
There are few levels of consumers starting from herbivores to higher carnivores like primary, secondary, tertiary through which energy flows from one trophic level to another.
Decomposers like bacteria, fungi etc gets energy by consuming dead bodies of both producers and consumers of all levels.
ENERGY FLOW IN ECOSYSTEM
. BIOMAGNIFICATION: The definition of biomagnification is the increase in the concentration of a substance present inside the tissues as it transfers from one trophic level to another. Toxic chemicals that flow out with factory wastes may contaminate the water used for agriculture. These chemicals enter into the crops. As the herbivores eat the crops chemicals enter their body. The herbivores pass the chemicals to carnivores and so on. But the toxic effect will be observed much higher in carnivores than the crops or herbivores. This is because of biomagnifications. The toxicity of the chemicals concentrate and increase as it passes through the trophic level.
Thus the top most trophic level of a food chain will always show the maximum biomagnifications.
As we know, only 10% of the total energy is transferred from one trophic level to its next.
If the energy produced in producer level is 1000KJ
Then in first consumer level i.e. herbivore level the energy will be 10% of 1000 = 100KJ
In second consumer level i.e. carnivore level the energy will be 10% off 100 = 10 KJ
