Major functions of connective tissue include: 1) binding and supporting, 2) protecting, 3) insulating, 4) storing reserve fuel, and 5) transporting substances within the body.

Five connective tissue :-

1) Areolar connective tissue

Function :-

a) it helps in repair of tissue after an injury .

b) it also helps in combating foreign toxins .

c) it fixes skin to underlying muscles .

2) Adipose connective tissue

Function :-

a) Serves as a fast reservoir .

b) Provides shape to the Limbs and the body .

c) keeps visceral organ in position

3) Dense regular connective tissue

It is divided into two parts i.e. tendons and ligaments .

a) Tendons :- join muscles to bone . Made up of white fibres

b) Ligaments :- join bones to bones . Made up of white as well as yellow fibres .

4) Skeletal tissue

It is divided into two parts i.e. cartilage and bone

a) Cartilage

Function :-

i) it provides support and flexibility to the body parts . It smoothens surface at joints .

b) Bone

Function :-

i) provides shape to the body

ii) Provides skeletal support to the body

iii) protects vital body organs such as brains , lungs , etc .

5) Fluid connective tissue

It is divided into two parts i.e. blood and lymph

a) Blood

Function :-

i) blood transports nutrients , hormones and vitamins a the tissue and transports excretory products from the tissues do the liver and kidney

ii) the red blood corpuscles carry oxygen to the tissues for the oxidation of foodstuff .

b) Lymph

Function :-

i) it brings carbon and nitrogenous waste from tissue fluid to blood

ii) being loaded with WBCs such as lymphocytes , the lymph protect the body against infections .
