The Invention
The shehnai’s invention happened during the time of Aurangzeb. When the pungi was banned in the royal court due to the drastic sound it produced, a barber modified it by widening and broadening it. He also put 7 holes in the pipe. When its music was presented in front of the royal court and all were impressed. This modified form of pungi was named the shehnai as it was modified by a nai (barber) and was first played in the chambers of the Shah.
Ustad Bismillah Khan
Ustad Bismillah Khan who’s name is always remembered when one mentions a shehnai was born in a family of musicians in Bihar. This musical blood he had in him made it quite simple for him to naturally play the shehnai. Born in Bihar, he was associated with music from a very young age. He started playing the shehnai with the guidance of his uncle at a very young age and practiced all day at the banks of Ganga or at the temple of Balaji or Mangala Maiya. With his first debut in the All India Radio, he also made his way to the Red Fort on the day of Independence and welcomed the free citizens of India though his melodious music.
A down to earth man with his heart totally in Dumraon and Varanasi, he was an excellent player of shehnai. Many national awards such as the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan were bestowed upon him.
