The name of the range derives from the Sanskrit Himā-laya (हिमालय, "Abode of Snow"), from himá (हिम, "snow") and ā-laya (आलय, "receptacle, dwelling"). They are now known as the "Himalaya Mountains", usually shortened to the "Himalayas". Formerly, they were described in the singular as the "Himalaya".
the himalayas consist of three ranges:
himadri-the topmost range of the himalayas, vegetation is low, climate is extremely cold.the peaks are always covered with snow.
himachal-the next range of the himalayas, vegetation exists and have hill stations.
India that has the largest share of the mighty Himalayas. Below is the map of the spread of Himalayas through India, Nepal,Bhutan and China.
The Himalayan mountain range and Tibetan plateau have formed as a result of the collision between the Indian Plate and Eurasian Plate which began 50 million yearsago and continues today. 225 million yearsago (Ma) India was a large island situated off the Australian coast and separated from Asia by the Tethys Ocean.
It is often called the Indian subcontinent because it is larger and more isolated than other peninsulas. North of the Himalayas is the Tibetan Plateau. It is called “the roof of the world”. However, the Tibetan Plateau is very dry because the plateau and the mountains act as a gigantic rain shadow.
