Kaziranga is a national park located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam, in India. The sanctuary is a World Heritage Site. It has two-thirds of the world's great one-horned rhinoceroses. In 1904 Lord Curzon's (who was the Viceroy of India) wife visited Kaziranga and wanted to see the famous rhinoceroses. But she saw only the hoof marks and did not see any rhinoceros in the forest. Balaram Hazarika, a well known animal tracker told Baroness Curzon about the need for wildlife conservation. She requested Lord Curzon to make efforts in the direction. So on November 4, 1904 Lord Curzon suggested that a reserve should be created in Kaziranga. On 1st June, 1905 the formation of the Kaziranga Reserve Forest with an area of 232 km2 was proposed formally. Gradually the area covered by it was increased.
In 1950, P.D. Stracey the forest conservationist renamed the Kaziranga Game Santuary as the Kaziranga Wildlife Santuary. The government of Assam passed the Assam National Park Act in 1968 for the creation of the national park. In 1974, an area of 430 sq. km was added and declared as the Kaziranga National Park.
