(1) When ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydroxide in presence of concentrated sulphuric acid to form an ESTER. This reaction is called ESTERIFICATION REACTION.

CH3COOH + C2H5OH --------》CH3COOC2H5 + H2O

(2)  Ethanoic acid reacts with sodium carbonate to produce sodium ethonoate, water and carbon dioxide.

  2CH3COOH + Na2CO3 → 2CH3COONa + H2O + CO2

(3)  Ethanoic acid is warmed with ethanol in the presence of a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid a sweet smelling Ester called ethyl ethanoate  is formed.

CH3COOH + C2H5OH ----Conc.H2SO4→ CH3COOH + H2O

This reaction to form an ester is called esterification. This reaction is also used as a test for ethanoic acid.
