It is used in manufacture of glass soap and paper.

It is produced by sodium chloride in 3 steps

1) Sodium chloride is reacted with ammonia and carbon dioxide to obtain sodium hydrogen carbonate.
NaCl + NH3 + H2O + CO2 -------- NaHCO3 + NH4Cl

2) sodium hydrogencarbonate is separated by filtration , dried and heated . On heating sodium hydrogencarbonate decomposes to form sodium carbonate
2NaHCO3 -------- Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

3) Anyhydrous sodium carbonate is dissolved in water and recrystalised to get washing soda crystals contaning 10 molecules of water of crystalisation.
Na2CO3 + 10H2O ----- Na2CO3.10H2O
