Salts can be categorised as neutral salts, acidic salts or basic salts :
1) The salts made up by the reaction of strong acid and strong base are called neutral salts.
For example, NaCl which is formed by the reaction of a strong base NaOH and a strong acid HCl. Thus NaCl solution has a pH of 7.
Similarly K2SO4 solution also has a pH of 7 since it is formed from a strong acid H2SO4 and a strong base KOH.
2)The salts made up by the reaction of strong acid and weak base are called acidic salt.
For example , Ammonium nitrate(NH4NO3) solution is made up of strong acid HNO3 and weak base ammonium NH4OH thus aqueous solution of ammonium nitrate is acidic and has a pH less than 7.
3) The salts made up by the reaction of a strong base and weak acid are called alkaline salts.
For example , Sodium acetate (CH3COONa) solution is made up of strong base NaOH and weak acid CH3COOH thus aqueous solution of Sodium acetate is alkaline and has a pH greater than 7.
