write conclusion regarding refraction of light
Answers
ConclusionThe objectives of this experiment are to study the refraction of light, to compare the angle of incidence in the firs medium to the angle of refraction in the second medium, and to determine the index of refraction of glass experimentally by applying Snell’s law.Refraction of light can be best simplified by stating that it is the bending of light as it travels from one medium to another. In this experiment, the bending of light can be observed in the first two parts of the experiment, wherein the pins which represent the ray of light, do not form a straight line as it passes through from glass to air and vice versa. Without obtaining the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction, it can be observed from the lines formed by the pins that if light were to pass through a medium of higher index of refraction to a medium of lower index of refraction, what can be expected is that the angle of incidence would be smaller than the angle of refraction. This is because when light passes through a medium with a high refractive index to a medium with a lower refractive index, the light’s movement would be less restricted, hence, its tendency would be to move away from the normal because it is in that direction that the light would move faster. As for the movement of light from a medium of low refractive index, to that of a high refractive index, the velocity of light would decrease in the medium of higher refractive index, thereby making the light appear to move closer to the normal line.In determining the index of refraction of glass experimentally, the use of trigonometric functions shows accurate results in determining the values of the index of refraction experimentally. This use however is limited because if a laser was used in determining the index of refraction of the medium, what has to be considered is that it is very inconvenient to measure light, especially since over exposure of laser light to the eyes can cause eye damage. Hence, the use of pins as a substitute is also appreciated.AcknowledgementsI would again like to thank my group mates for a job well done in performing this experiment. Although some of them arrived late, at least they could still understand how to perform the experiment.I would also like to thank multiply for keeping me entertained while writing this experiment because my friends posted a lot of amusing blogs which kept me awake throughout this writing. Also, I would like to thank Sony for selling me my mp3, which ultimately leads to my current music player. The Sonic Stage program also helped me in keeping myself entertained while writing this report.
Answer:
Refraction of light is stated below.
Explanation:
When light passes through a transparent material, it interacts with electrons within the material (and is scattered based on the distance between the atoms/molecules within the material, but that's another story). The speed of light in matter is exactly the same as in vacuum. However, when light interacts with electrons, there is absorption and emission of photons with a slight delay compared to unperturbed light. Light waves have oscillations with peaks and troughs in the intensity of the electric field. The phase or position of these vibrations is affected by electronic interactions such that the phase speed is effectively reduced (or faster than other materials, but always slower than vacuum). Light changes how much this happens depends on the electronic properties of the material at the light frequencies. These properties are not constant for all colors in the visible spectrum of most materials, resulting in a prism-like color separation. This is because the materials have different phase velocities, so the colors are refracted at different angles.
